Industries are assigned a two digit number, business types within that industry have a four digit number comprised of the first two industry numbers and the last two numbers, the specific business type.  Further defining that business with six digit numbers and further still, a very, very finite type of business with an eight digit number.

As an example, SIC 18xx-39xx are manufacturers, SIC 2091 are canned and cured fish manufacturers, 209101 is fish & seafood soups and 20910104 are canned clam chowder.
